How To Measure Surface Barbells

What Is A Surface Barbell?

Surface barbells, also know as staples, are similar to standard straight barbells with the difference being that the ends of the surface bar are bent up in a 90 degree or 45 degree angle. Surface bars give the look of a double piercing with the majority of the bar (the length) hidden under the skin and only the attachments are in view on the top of the skin.

How To Measure The Depth Of A Surface Bar

The standard way to measure the depth of a surface barbell is to measure the straight part, of the short side, of the bar with the balls or attachments in place.

As you can see in the picture above, the bent section at the corner of the surface bar is not included in the measurement for the depth of the bar.

So to measure the depth of a surface barbell you measure the space between the inside/bottom edge of the ball/attachment along the straight part of the bar until you reach the start of the bent section of the bar. In the picture above this is shown as the yellow section between the two red lines.

How To Measure The Length Of A 90 Degree Surface Bar

To measure the length of a 90 degree angle surface bar you measure the space between the inside edge of the bar at the point where the bar meets the ball or attachment.

The length is the straight part of the surface bar only, and excludes the bent corner sections.

The ball or attachment needs to be on the bar for you determine the correct point to measure.

How To Measure The Length Of A 45 Degree Surface Bar

When measuring the length of the 45 degree angle surface bar it’s slightly different from when you measure the 90 degree angle surface bar as mentioned above.

What is the same for measuring the length of both the 45 and 90 degree surface barbells is that you are only measuring the straight part of the bar and excluding the bent part of the bar.

So when measuring the 45 degree angle surface barbell you can see in the picture above that you are not measuring between the inside edge as you are with the 90 degree surface barbell. Nor are you measuring from the top edge of the ball. Hopefully the picture above shows you what I mean!

We have a great selection of surface bars made from Implant Grade 23 (Ti6Al4V ELI, ASTM F136) Titanium including pre-sterlised surface barbells. Perfect for all your surface piercing needs!
